The lesson's characters, Tony and Aria, represent the community members who will ultimately benefit from the city government's initiative to improve information design by making reports more informative and understandable.
Problem: The difficulty residents have in understanding the traditional water quality reports they receive. This lack of clarity is primarily caused by the use of technical jargon and complex data, which is overwhelming for the average resident. This is a serious issue, as Tony notes that clear and concise reports are essential to prevent incidents and for residents to feel confident about the safety and cleanliness of their water. Aria highlights the severity of the problem by stating that over 63 million Americans have been exposed to potentially unsafe water in the past decade.
Solution: The redesign of the water quality report as part of a city government initiative to improve information design and make reports more understandable. The new, redesigned reports utilize easy-to-understand charts and graphs to visualize water quality data, making it accessible to everyone. Furthermore, the report goes beyond just data by providing practical tips to residents on how they can contribute to maintaining and improving their community's water quality. The successful outcome is evidenced by residents expressing satisfaction, finding the new report informative and engaging.
